Dark Romance

Slow Burn

Tension that builds for chapters, sometimes a whole book, before anything happens. In dark romance, slow burn usually pairs with a dangerous setting, so the waiting itself becomes part of the menace. Check the spice rating: slow burn describes pacing, not how explicit the payoff is.
