The auction is the mechanism of the captive romance — she was sold, bought, and the transaction is the beginning. Kincaid writes the dark romance with the auction as the inciting event: the bidder is the hero, the auction price is the first claim, and the story is what happens after the gavel falls and the paperwork begins.
