Hearts of darkness: both hearts are dark, or the hearts belong to the darkness they're in. Wiltcher writes the captive romance with the plural hearts as the key — there are two people in this darkness, both of their hearts are involved, and the romance is mutual in its complications in ways neither of them planned for.
