The eyes in the title belong to someone who has been watching her in ways that should be alarming and aren't. Lehotzky writes the dark romantasy with possessiveness as the operative romantic register — the devious is structural, the burgundy is the color of wine and blood, and the gaze that begins the story doesn't end there.
