The opening of the Nightshades series delivers a devil of a hero and a heroine who blooms in his shadow. Expect lush, dangerous atmosphere, a possessive criminal kingpin, and a romance threaded with poison and devotion in equal measure. The darkness simmers in power games and forbidden wanting rather than gratuitous cruelty. A strong pick for readers who like their mafia leads obsessive, their tension thick, and their love sharp-edged.
