The prep school setting makes the cruelty institutional — everyone there knows how to cut someone down to size, and this particular cruelty is one person's specific project. Fox writes the bully romance with the school hierarchy as the architecture: the antagonism is organized, the heroine is the target, and what changes between them is as slow as the prep school year.
