The title is deliberately understated — the unpleasant thing is either the captivity or what grows from it, and the unpleasant is the civilized word for something considerably more extreme. Rowan writes the captive romance with the irony of the understatement doing the work: whatever the unpleasant thing is, it requires a full novel to describe.
